Food safety in Vietnam is increasingly becoming an important topic discussed around the dinner table. With recent floods causing havoc in the agriculture sector, it is estimated that around 60% of fruit and vegetables in Hanoi are imported from China. In response to fears that imported vegetables are sprayed with chemicals to keep them “fresh”, the Vietnamese government began testing imported items from China. There are however, no guarantees that Vietnamese fruit and vegetables are safe, with no certificate of origin. Vietnamese farmers are known to use high levels of fertilizers and pesticides to improve yields. Current food safety concerns in Vietnam range from foot-and-mouth disease to bird flu and more recently melamine in eggs.
