The port of Mombasa increases capacity

The first phase of the Mombasa Port Development Project (MPDP) has been completed, with a 50% increase in capacity to 550,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The project was started in 2012 to reduce congestion at the port. Mombasa is the major port for the Northern Transport Corridor, with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and parts the Democratic Republic Republic of the Congo (e.g. Eastern Congo) retying on it for port access. The second and third phases of the MPDP are scheduled for completion in 2017 and 2020.
