Impala Refining Services in Springs unveiled their first hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklift prototype. The project is a collaboration between Implats and the Department of Science and Technology ( HySA Systems Centre of Competence at the University of the Western Cape). Implats plans to use hydrogen fuel cell technology for their material handling and underground mining equipment.
Green supply chain and renewable energy are increased concerns for South African companies. In the United States, companies such as Walmart and Whole Foods have been using hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklifts for a number of years. For South African companies, beyond the potential of a reduced carbon footprint, a fuel cell industry can also create “green jobs” in the country.
