Greenpeace retail renewable report – Woolworths the highest, Shoprite got a F

A new Greenpeace report ‘Shopping Clean – Retailers and Renewable Energy’ ranked Woolworths and Massmart the highest of all the South African retailers. The retailers are ranked against one another on energy transparency, commitment to renewable energy, greenhouse gas mitigation and lobbying for clean renewable energy. However, South African retailers still have a long way to go to show “love for renewable energy”, as the report likes to call it. Massmart and Pick n Pay installed solar PV that contribute a small percentage of their overall energy consumption. Shoprite received the lowest ranking for “its lack of transparency with regard to the company’s energy information.”
