The Minister for Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday reiterated that the proposed Lagos-Ibadan segment of Lagos-Kano rail line project will be operational within the next two and half years. According to the Minster, the Port Harcourt-Calabar rail line is also on schedule. The Minister made the statement at a lecture series titled; “Migrating workforce: the challenges of mass transportation,” organised by the Lagos Traffic Radio.
Nigeria is moving towards standard gauge rail (SGR), and the The Lagos-Kano SGR has been in the pipeline for a while. In 2006, the Nigerian government awarded a $8.3 billion contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, but funding delayed the project and the Nigerian government decided to build the Lagos-Kano SGR in segments.
