The Niger Delta Avengers (not to be mistaken with Marvel Comics’ Avengers who battled evil forces in their 2016 movie in Lagos) on Sunday claimed five new attacks on the country’s oil and gas infrastructure, including two Chevron oil wells in the Delta state. The group is fighting for a bigger share of crude revenue. The Avengers, are rumoured to be former rebels with insider knowledge of the region’s oil and gas infrastructure. They have warned against repairing the pipelines until their demands are met.
The group is putting increased pressure on Muhammadu Buhari’s government, who made an election promise to crush militia and terrorists groups, including Boko Haram. Nigeria’s oil production dropped from 2.2 million barrels a day to a 20-year low of 1.4 million barrels a day in June.
