Mobile App in South Africa to increase visibility and reduce out of stocks

A mobile has been deployed in Public Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in South Africa to monitor medicine availability and report of out of stocks (OOS). The Stock Visibility System’s (SVS) development is a Vodacom and National Department of Health (NDoH) collaboration, and has been deployed in over 3,000 PHCs. The app allows for increased visibility for health professionals, and provides status alerts and reports via SMS and email. The software can also generate heat maps, to provide a graphical representation of OOS, and highlight districts facing drug shortages.

The system was piloted with great success in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo provinces in 2014 and 2015. During the pilot period, some districts reported a reduction in OOS of over 40%. Prior to the deployment of the mobile app, the NDoH relied on manual system, that provided limited visibility and delayed response times.
