Nigeria’s opens Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge railway

Nigeria unveiled the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge railway (SGR) on Tuesday. The rail link is designed for a speed of 150 km per hour, reducing the travel time by an hour. The 187 km railway is the first SGR Chinese funded project on the African continent. The next SGR project in Nigeria, will focus on the Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Kano projects.

The Lagos-Kano SGR has been on the drawing board for a while. In 2006, the Nigerian government awarded a $8.3 billion contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, but funding delayed the project and the Nigerian government decided to build the Lagos-Kano SGR in segments.
