DISPATCHES FROM THE EDGES True Stories from Markets, Borders and Backroads

Some journeys begin with a plan. Others begin with a drug search on a bus, a border crossing and a road that exists only on the map.

Dispatches from the Edges is a collection of stories from nearly thirty years of travel across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific and Latin America. Tielman Nieuwoudt did not go as a tourist or a reporter. He went because somebody, somewhere, was expecting a delivery.

From the highlands of Ethiopia to the streets of Hanoi, from Rio’s beaches to Iranian bazaars, these are stories from places rarely found on the usual itinerary.

There are markets and motorbikes, deserts and monsoons, dictators and drunken tourists, beautiful landscapes, terrible roads and the occasional animal with questionable intentions.

But this is not a guidebook.

It is about the moments that stay with you long after the journey ends. The stranger who helps. The official who doesn’t. The meal you still remember. The town you almost missed. The journey that went wrong and became the story you tell for years afterwards.

Selected Stories from Dispatches from the Edges.
